Happy Festivus Theme Party

The fake holiday called "Festivus" first appeared on Seinfeld back in 1997, but it included some traditions that many of us already include in our own holiday celebrations, such as traditional foods and yelling at your relatives!  This year, instead of a boring old Holiday Party, we decided to throw a Festivus for the Rest of Us Party!

Using Evite, I sent FREE invitations to my friends and family with the title line saying, "I have a lot of problems with you people!"

A Festivus must is to keep decorations to a minimum, so I made 5 Festivus Poles as the centerpiece of the buffet table.  We used them as door prizes along with "Astronaut Pens," Jujyfruits, and Junior Mints!

When guests arrived, we asked them to select a Name Tag with their favorite Seinfeld character on it.  This made for some laughs as well as a great ice breaker between guests who didn't know each other.

To keep guests in the Festivus mood, I printed out some memorable moments/quotes from Seinfeld and posted them all around the house in some unexpected places!

Now... for the menu! Everything on the table was Seinfeld inspired which was easy to do since so many episodes focused on food:

THE Marble Rye

"These Pretzles Are Making Me Thirsty"

"Don't Double Dip" Veggies & Dip

"Elaine's" Big Salad

"Frank Costanza's" Kasha & Brown Gravy

"The Soup Nazi's" Jambalaya

"Steinbrenner's" Calzones

"Kenny Rogers Roasters" Chicken

THE Chocolate Babka

Muffin Tops (with Stumps for the Homeless)

THE Black & White Cookies

"George's Garbage" Eclairs

"The Wedding Cake of Edward VIII"

Snicker's Bars to "Eat with a Fork"

"Open the Vault" Peach Schnapps Punch*

What a great time!  Having a Festivus party took all of the formality out of the traditional holiday party and it also made it possible to serve some very different foods from the usual cheese ball and shrimp cocktail!  I think it was a hit because there was very little food left afterwards (that, and I gave guests a plate to fill for their lunches the following day)!  Waste not, Want not!
